Remember That Every Profile Has Strengths and Weaknesses
As you read through your profile, you’re going to find lots of warning signs about the ways things might go wrong for your particular GenoType. Some are prone to cancer, others to heart disease. Some have a tendency to put on excess weight; others struggle with a nervous energy that burns too “hot.” Usually, the very qualities that give a GenoType its strengths are also the source of its most disturbing weaknesses. Much like the concept of Yin and Yang in Chinese medicine, each of the strengths of a particular GenoType carries within itself the seed of its weakness, and vice versa.
As a result, some people have a tendency to view their profiles as a kind of death sentence, a blueprint for how things will sooner or later go wrong. They see that their GenoType is prone to cancer or vulnerable to diabetes, and they feel as though I’ve told them that such diseases are definitely in their future.
Nothing could be further from the truth. To me, these GenoType profiles are like signs along life’s highway: “Slow Down—Curves Ahead” or “Slippery When Wet.” You want to know what to watch out for so you can take the most effective steps to avoid it. A warning sign on the highway doesn’t predict that you will have an accident; it only tells you what kind of accidents you should be especially careful to avoid. You don’t need the “Curves” sign on a straight stretch of road or the “Slippery When Wet” sign in the desert. You get the warnings you need for the particular dangers you face. And since “nobody gets out of here alive,” we all face some!
I’m a naturopathic physician, so my primary interest is always in helping people to achieve the optimal health and vitality that is possible for them. Sometimes it seems ironic that in order to help people make things go right, I have to spend so much time talking about what might go wrong. A long, vital life at your optimal weight is our goal—and I believe you can make great strides in that direction. But in order to move forward, you need a realistic understanding of what might be holding you back. That’s what these GenoType profiles are intended to show you—so please view them as keys to your progress, not as predictions of doom.
